Calculating Rating Points for Age of Empires II

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings uses the same guidelines and formulas used to calculate rating points as Rise of Rome. If you're not familiar with how ratings points are calculated and are awarded, then take a moment to read the following information below.

Getting Started: Quick Guidelines
Before you get started, read these game-setting requirements and rating rules. It's important to read this information before playing a game!

  1. Make sure cheating is disabled. Games with cheating enabled will not be recorded or rated.
  2. No computer players are allowed in rated games.
  3. A game with co-op players (two players with the same player number and color) will not be rated.
  4. If any of the game settings disagree between players, the game will not be rated.
  5. If you are assigned to a team before the game begins, you need to stay on that team till the end. Players that decide to switch teams during the game will receive an incomplete at the end.
  6. In a free-for-all game (players are by themselves), players can change alliances as much as they want and still be rated.
  7. Each player's individual game time through the Ages (Feudal, Castle, and Imperial) will be recorded and posted on the Ratings page. The time will only be recorded if your game has the default settings: no death match, use only default resources, and no reveal map. If you decide not to use the default settings, the game will still be rated, but the time won't be recorded.
How Rating Points are Calculated
The Zone Rating System has its own formula for calculating rating points for games won or lost in the Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings. You begin with 1600 rating points. Your rating points will increase when you win a game and decrease when you lose a game. Here are the formulas used to calculate Age of Empires II rating points for won and lost games.

Variables:
R old is your current rating.

R1 is the average rating of the winning players before the game.

R2 is the average rating of the losing players before the game.

f is a calculated point value between -1 and 1.

f = max [min [(R2-R1) / 400, 1], -1]

If you win a game:

Winning Points = max [16 * (1 + f), 1]

Through this formula, you are guaranteed at least +1 point for each game won.

If you lose a game:

Losing Points = min [16 * (-1 + f), -1]

Through this formula, you will lose at least 1 point for each game lost, unless your rating is 100 points. The rating program will never drop your rating below 100 rating points.

Formulas Used to Find Your New Rating:
Here's how to calculate your new rating for a win:

For each win, your new rating = R old + (winning points/number of winners)

Here's how to calculate your new rating for a loss:

For each loss, your new rating = R old + (losing points/number of losers)

What Is an Incomplete?
In a rated game, you can get a win, a loss, a tie, or an Incomplete. The Zone understands that any player, for various reasons, may sometimes be unable to complete the game, hence the name. You can receive an Incomplete in two ways:

  • If your connection to the Zone is dropped after the first legal move is made, the game's considered Incomplete. In the Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, you'll receive an Incomplete if you resign or are dropped less than four minutes into a game.
  • If you ALT+TAB from a game and close the game room, the Zone will not be able to record your score, and you will get an Incomplete.
How Penalties Are Calculated for Incompletes
For every five incomplete games, your rating will decrease by the points you would have lost had you stayed in the game and been defeated, plus the average of those points as an additional penalty. So it's better to stay, complete a game, and lose than to leave early. Your rating points will thank you.

Here's the formula:

Incomplete penalty =    (cumulative points lost for games 1 through 5)     + (the average points lost for games 1 through 5)

Having an Incomplete Removed from Your Record
Every time you complete 20 games (win, loss, or tie), an existing Incomplete will be removed from your rating record. You do not have to complete 20 games in a row, just a cumulative 20. No credits are given toward future Incompletes, however.

Here are some examples:
  • You've just completed 20 games and you had no Incompletes, so your record is unaffected and the completed-games counter starts over again at 0. Therefore, if you receive an Incomplete in the next game, you need another 20 completed games to remove it from your record.
  • You've completed 15 games, then get an Incomplete; you need another 5 completed games to remove it.
Note: Only a current Incomplete is removed from your record; no rating points will be credited back to you after you've been penalized for having five Incompletes.
