Greetings to you, and may this letter find you well.
Herein lie the benefits and requirements for joining the Righteous Order, under the protective tutelage of Lord Fafhrd the Red-Bearded. We are a group that is intent on the growth and development of each of our members. We seek not to rule but to guide, and not to take from, but to give to. There is a vast rift in Dereth between those who have been adventuring long and those who are new to this world. Our intent is to gather a group of honorable and brave individuals and through our strength in numbers discover the riches that abound in Dereth and share them among us.
Be it known that while most allegiances will not accept newer, low-level characters into their ranks, we welcome the untested, and hope that through the help and guidance of our leaders you will come to be renowned throughout the land for your strength, wisdom, and honor. In welcoming you, we ask only that if you decide to abandon your current self and take another character into battle, that you will remove yourself from our Order and seek us out again in your next life. The benefits bestowed on a newcomer will remain the same, and your new character can have an edge on becoming a great adventurer.
As a new recruit, you will be given a small amount of pyreal with which to better equip yourself. It seems only fair that this should be on an ascending order commensurate with your current level upon joining. That being said, a sum of 200 pyreals per level is a just amount and will be given to you upon your entry into our order. As you attain higher ranks within our Order, you will be given the sum of 1000 pyreals multiplied by the allegiance rank you have achieved. A ranking of one in 1 in our order will receive no bonus, 2 will receive 1000p, 3 will receive 2000p, etc. The sum will be presented to you as a gift from our Lord himself, and should be requested from your immediate superior. When this is given, the giver can then request reimbursement from Lord Fafhrd, and a meeting place will be arranged to quickly see that all involved are given their due.
If you are a warrior, you will be given the choice upon your entry into our Righteous Order of:
- A new weapon, of the type you excel in, of greater strength than you now carry. If you are joining with a new character, this will be done immediately. If you are a stronger character, you will most likely have a fair weapon. If this is still your choice, the person recruiting you will contact Lord Fafhrd, and he will search among the ranks for a suitable prize for your allegiance. He will then contact either you our your immediate superior to arrange a meeting place.
- A new coat of armor. The type of armor will be a breastplate or leggings, and will be determined by your level, and your need. This will be up to the discretion of your immediate Patron. As above, the stronger of you will have fair armor already, and a search will have to be made for a suitable set.
It will also be required of the person to whom you make your pledge to enter into a fellowship with you until that day's battles are done. This will give you a boost in experience, and better prepare you for a long and fruitful life.
Be you a wizard, there is little doubt that your interest lies in the arcane and difficult task of divining and learning new spells. There are a few things you must know. Some wizards find that sharing of knowledge is not right, that to properly wield the power of a spell you must learn it on your own. However, we know that many feel differently, and so we wish to strike a balance between the two. Therefore, when you join, you will be given the formula to one spell, and guidance as to how to develop your own. You may pick the enchantment type of your greatest interest. After that, you will be given a new formula every 2 levels, and more guidance as to how to develop more powerful magic. You will also receive a newer suit of armor to help you in you quest, but as above, this is only at the time of your pledge. You will also be joined in your initial day of battle in a fellowship with your immediate Patron, to further your experience and help you towards becoming an Archmage yourself.
Furthermore, since we do not wish you to give up your secrets, we ask only that you divulge one spell of whichever type you discover to Fafhrd himself. Let it be known that Lord Fafhrd does not practice magic himself, feeling that the crush of his blows is enough to vanquish his foes. He will, however, keep a record of the spells divulged to him, and will grant this knowledge only sparingly, and to those who have proven their worthiness. The guidance you receive should be enough to help you on your way, and together with the spells you earn by advancing in levels, you will have a distinct edge over those who choose to travel through Dereth alone. Only Fafhrd will divulge spells after your initial pledge, and only when it is proven you have earned it. To do otherwise would be unfair to all.
The code of the Righteous Order is simple. We seek the betterment of all the races in Dereth, and do so through honor, bravery, and generosity. There is no disdain for the new, nor contempt for the old. We steal not from corpses, and it is asked that if you come across a fallen hero who has lost a valued possession, you seek only to return his or her goods, and in doing so you will advance the Order worldwide. We all know the pain and toil that goes into the things we own, and these are things which the Order values. We adventure for our fellow man, not against.
The only other thing that Lord Fafhrd asks of you is to mark the goods you sell with your name and title (e.g., Lord Fafhrd of the Righteous Order). If you find a piece of parchment on a fallen beast, and you do not wish to take it, leave your mark, and the name of the Righteous Order. This way more will know our name, and surely interest will grow in our group, and our ranks will swell.
Patrons, it is you who will swell our ranks the greatest. The benefits to you are great, for while your vassals adventure you will gain a small amount of their experience. It is you who are responsible for the initial gifts to your new vassals, and you should be both fair and generous in giving. Contact Fafhrd with requests for the rewards for growing our ranks, and the pyreals for achieving higher ranking within our Order. Seek out new recruits often and regularly, and you will see your power grow.
So, welcome to you, and may you find glory and fame. Should you need partners in adventure, seek out others of the Order. Ask your Patron, or Lord Fafhrd himself, to pass the word of where you are, and where to gather for a quest. Lord Fafhrd is generous and honorable, and many times will join you himself, or pass a gift on to you, or knowledge necessary to fulfill your quest. Ask your Patron for any guidance you need, and he in turn will ask his, and together our knowledge will ease your struggling. Tell all you know of your decision to join us, and direct them to this document. Perhaps they will join us, and you will become not a recruit, but a Patron and Lord yourself. Long life to you, my friend, and long live the Righteous Order.
--Lord Fafhrd
