Operation Torch ? Wildfire in the Desert

By Rapier@Zone

The airfields are quiet now without a virtual wind to move the shutters. Totally quiet and without movement. But on July 25th, these quiet fields reverberated with the roar of hundreds of computer generated engines in one of the mightiest competitions of Fighter Ace's brief history. Dying aircraft streaked like meteors to the ground marking their funeral pyres in columns of smoke.

The command staffs had spent countless and largely thankless hours creating their strategic and tactical strategies and now all of it would be put to a massive test. Both the US and GE would offensive and defensive phases. The Zone events staff and KForce created a new method to insure more even numbers during the fight.

The huge airforces met and clashed in the skies over Fighter Ace land. First over US territory, the Bf109G's of the Luftwaffe battling through the determined American opposition, opening the way for the FW190A8's punishing ground attack. When the smoke had cleared in the first round the Luftwaffe had managed a narrow Tactical victory.

But now the juggernaut created by PTR_ICE started to build up steam. The Luftwaffe Kids had hit their stride and now the 109's were cleaving through the American forces and the FW190's were hitting many fields with little opposition. Not that the Americans weren't trying and in places they were very effective in shooting down German planes. But the German side seemed to have grasped the principle of concentration of forces on the objectives, giving them superior numbers where it counted. They kept their units together and did a great job of reforming after the initial melee.

As happens in real battles, once the tide had turned it was too strong to resist. The Germans rolled to Decisive Victories in Frames 2 and 3 despite determined and persistent opposition by the US. The US pilots did a great job and never quit, continuing to punish the GE for every ground objective attacked.

Salute to all Fighter Aces who participated. And a special Thanks and Salute to those who made this possible.
