Analyst Florin Felecan's Chat Excerpts 7-20-99!!

+Debbee:
. This is a great opportunity to talk with one of the top young players in the world of chess, so get your questions ready!
+Debbee:
Born on April 7,1980, Florin Felecan began playing chess at age 8. Trained by his father, he entered his first tournament in 1989. From 1992 to 1994, he competed in the French Junior Championships at Bagneux and Capelle la Grande, and tied for first place
+Debbee:
In 1996, Felecan's Romanian Golden Team won the Youth Olympiad. The next year, he and his family moved to the United States. He became National High School Chess Champion in 1998 and attended the University of Maryland, where he studied computer science.
+Debbee:
This year, Felecan is increasingly involved in speed chess tournaments. We are very pleased to have him as a Chess Analyst.
feste160:
It seems that most of the players are following the advice of Irina Krush and her team. What are your views on that?
Florin@Zone:

If you have to make the best move you may get the same move.

Florin@Zone:
it may be Irina's or somebody else's

feste160:
but as you saw, over 50% of players went with her last recommendation. Do you feel that her team has taken over?
Florin@Zone:

not at all

+Debbee:
**Note** We will be giving away some Kasparov vs. the World Tshirts throughout the Chat today. Watch for announcements from +
hcoumans:
How many moves ahead do you generally evaluate, both your own and your opponent's?
Florin@Zone:

usually 6 moves

Florin@Zone:
it depends on the position

hcoumans:
is a good memory of past games essential?
Florin@Zone:

in over-the-board games, yes

hcoumans:
re Kasparov game, it is insulting to suggest that many players do not vote for the move that they think is best
Florin@Zone:

there are many players involved at different levels so it's not a surprise

Florin@Zone:
sometimes the differences between the moves are very small

+Pawfangs:
Auxon0, , you have just been randomly chosen to receive a FREE Kasparov vs. the World Tshirt!! Congrats! Please send your full name, zone nick, and mailing address via email to zevents@microsoft.com, to claim your gift, thanks!
mr_slippery:
What did you love most about attending the University of Maryland?
Florin@Zone:

hanging out with my friends

mr_slippery:
What did you hate most about attending UMD?
Florin@Zone:

my engineering class

mr_slippery:
If a person dedicates their life solely to mastering chess, is that a waste of a life?
Florin@Zone:

I certainly believe so

Florin@Zone:
I do not advise anyone to do so

mr_slippery:
And finally, what are you doing now besides chess?
Florin@Zone:

enjoy life

Shadow_Blend:
As the thought of the World being able to win this game is something inconceivable, I think that we should have a clear strategy of playing for a draw. What is your opinion?
Florin@Zone:

Chess is a sport

Florin@Zone:
and we have all chances to play for a win

Florin@Zone:
our duty is to make the game as interesting as possible

SMD8447:
Hello Florin, my name is Shaun. I am trying to start to develop a good opening repertoire. Right now I like The Kings Indian Defense. Do you know any good books on this opening?
Florin@Zone:

Try Efim Geller "King's Indian" and Andrew Martin " Winning with King's Indian Defense"

SMD8447:
What are your favorite openings?
Florin@Zone:

king's Indian, English , Pirc, and Sokolski

pandelume:
Hi Florin, I'm very glad to have your help as a World Team Coach. ..
pandelume:
In your recommendation you gave the line 15... d5 16. Be3 d4 17. Rc1 Rd8! But how do you respond to 16. Na4 Kc7 17. Bg5 ? Doesn't your line expose the Black King to dangerous attacks?
Florin@Zone:

not at all because i can play my king on e8 and push my pawn further even if i have to sac a pawn for that

pandelume:
you would sac the b6 pawn for that?
Florin@Zone:

it depends

Florin@Zone:
in your line, no

Florin@Zone:
because i can play Kc7 and Rd8 safely and strong

Florin@Zone:
done

pandelume:
Now that the move 15... Ra8 has been played, do you think GK will respond with Be3, and what do you think is our best continuation?
Florin@Zone:

we have to see which move he considers is the best

Auxon0:
I was going to ask the same question - what is GK's best next move ...
Florin@Zone:

well Be3 bringing the a rook in play

Auxon0:
if he does that would d5 still be viable on the next move?
Florin@Zone:

with the pawn on d5 the rook is best placed on d8

Florin@Zone:
done

Auxon0:
where should we bring the Rook next?
Florin@Zone:

for now on the Rook is not to worry

Zek:
Do you have any information on the total voting on each move? I estimate it is 4,000-6,000 now. Why haven't the totals been released?
Florin@Zone:

I don't know

+Debbee:
We don't have that inforation tonight, sorry
feste160:
how do you train? do you have GM advisors?...
Florin@Zone:

no

feste160:
so you do it all yourself?
Florin@Zone:

but i have my books, libraries, software etc.

feste160:
how much time are you able to devote a day to this game?
Florin@Zone:

it varies from 2-6 hours a day

feste160:
excellent, will we win?
Florin@Zone:

as I told you before we are playing a game and nobody knows how is going to end

_axolotl_:
Hi Florin! In one of your analyses prior to our World Variation move, you stated we had to move our queen before we could castle, but she was not blocking either wing. What was your thinking there?
Florin@Zone:

I meant that our Queen is not well placed.

_axolotl_:
Also, have you heard of the American GM Jude Acers? He's not on the list anymore, whatever happened to him?
Florin@Zone:

No, tell me more.

_axolotl_:
He was a rising star back in the seventies . . . .
__YAG:
hello, how did you get started playing chess, and when?
Florin@Zone:

I started to play chess at about 8 years old because I had a chess tournament at my school.

Florin@Zone:
soccer and biking

Shadow_Blend:
World Champion Anatoly Karpov has played [and won] the World a few times over the Net. Do you know those games, and is there something "we" could learn from our past mistakes?
Florin@Zone:

Sure, if you want to become a good blitz player.

BS_Phantom:
I heard that to be good, you play your opponent, not the chess board. How do you normally proceed against someone who plays very agressively, and conversely, someone who holds back in is more reserve? Do you match their strategies?
Florin@Zone:

Well, you have to play the position it does't matter who is your opponent, just make the best move available

BS_Phantom:
If you had a kid and could only give him one piece of advice to achieve the success you have had in Chess, what would you say to him/her?
Florin@Zone:

Believe in Yourself.

jjlin316:
In the future, can you post more in-depth analysis as to why you think your move is the best? It'll be more helpful to us. Thanks.
Florin@Zone:

I will try to give more detaliated commentaries

SMD8447:
Do you have any tournaments you are going to be competing in soon?
Florin@Zone:

not really because I now have my summer vacation

drmofe:
How will your advice be different for the endgame...
drmofe:
...if we get down to a position that can be predicted 20-30 moves ahead...
Florin@Zone:

an endgame is different and it becomes a race to get pawns Queened etc...? because you have to study a lot in order to fing the right moves

drmofe:
Do you think it will be more useufl to show analysis for 5-10 moves ahead rather than recommending one move at a time?
Florin@Zone:

No, obviously not.

drmofe:
not?
Florin@Zone:

Most people have a certain level of play.

drmofe:
But if you could show a plan - an idea of how you think - wouldn't that help people to see chess in a new way?
Florin@Zone:

Yes, indeed. A plan is necessary

+Debbee:
I'd like to thank our guest Florin for spending time with us tonight, we all enjoyed it!! I'd also like to thank all of you for coming :-)) Look for Florin's commentary as well as the other anaylsts as the game progresses. Good Night, ALL !!!!!!!!
