How embarrassing it is to be teed up on the back nine at Mojo Bay and not know what to do next. Here are four easy steps to get you started:
- Take aim - In the game screen, click and hold your left mouse button and a red and white aim marker will appear. Drag it to an area on the course in the direction you want your shot to go. Watch for trees and other obstacles - anything between you and the aim marker is going to get hit. Also note the number of yards between the ball and the aim marker (shown on the left of the game screen). This will help you determine which club to use and how hard to hit the ball.
- Choose your club - If you have Caddy selected (from the Player Settings menu), a club will automatically be selected for you. Otherwise, drag your cursor down to the bottom of the screen and a menu will appear. Click on Clubs and a selection of the clubs you're carrying will appear. Holding the cursor over a given club will bring up the number for each club's hitting range in yards. Left-click on the club of your choice to select it.
- Select a ball - the default ball is normal. If you're looking to thrash your opponent's game, choose from an array of special purpose balls in Extreme Golf or a battery of exploding balls in Deathmatch or Poison.
- Swing away - Click on the Swing icon at the center of the game screen to put the ball into play.
Additional Tips
You can select the number of Special balls players can carry in a game. Loading up on Big Berthas (the most powerful ball) might give you a lot of firepower, but it can also be boring because your game becomes a tennis match, with each player exchanging shots waiting for the one who's most damaged to expire first. Limiting the number of bombs you can carry adds a strategic element to the game, making the timing of your plays more important.
When playing a round Extreme Golf, prank balls can help you as well as hinder your opponent. Some of the balls you can choose from, like Loopy or Bouncy, are specifically designed to be used for pranks and would only hurt your score if you selected them for yourself. Other balls can enhance your shots, or throw off your opponents'. For example, you might want to use a Rocket ball for yourself to boost a shot that would normally fall way short of your intended target. On the other hand, you can use the Rocket ball as a prank against your opponent. Just when they think they're setting up for a short drive, your prank will send their ball screaming down range.
A window will appear at the bottom of the screen, just left of center, indicating that your opponent has set you up with a prank ball. The type of prank is also indicated in this window unless it is the Hidden Prank ball has been played against you, in which case a randomly selected prank will be activated. Two black hash marks will appear at the bottom of the Swing Meter to either side of the bottom green hash mark. If, during the downswing, you click anywhere in-between these black marks, you will foil the prank and your ball will behave normally. If, however, you click anywhere outside the black marks, the prank ball will be activated.
