General Gameplay Tips

As the commander of an elite force, you'll want to guide your team carefully and efficiently through the labyrinth of each terrorist lair. You'll need your wits about you to keep your forces from getting slaughtered.

Modes of Play

There are three modes in which to play Rainbow Six:

Adversarial Multiplayer     You play against another human player, and when you die, you're dead until the end of the mission. There is a time limit, so you won't have to wait long.
Cooperative Multiplayer     You and a partner play the Rainbow team together. When you die, you can take over any other player that's run by the AI (Artificial Intelligence).
Single Player     When you die, you take over an AI character until all of the characters on your team are dead.

Weaponry

No need for trip mines, gas bombs, or plastic explosives; this fast-paced world speaks one language only: the language of bullets. And if you want to pick up someone else's weapon, forget it! First, you'll have sufficient ammo and weapons for the job. And besides, you should never trust a gun you didn't load yourself. It could be rigged, trapped, or laced with something lethal. And no, you won't pull a "Rambo" -- firing wildly in a Fourth of July Hollywood spectacle. You'll want your bullets to count. A 9mm bullet can mean a bad wound, or if aimed properly, death to your opponent. Then again, it could also just bounce off the wall behind the terrorist. Think before you shoot. You can injure your own men.

Your Team's Health

Choose your teams carefully. Remember that you may not need every man every time. There are no rules saying you have to have a full complement of eight men per mission. You may want to save some of your men for later missions. As in real life, if you get a man injured, fatigued, or killed, he will remain that way for the next mission. You can let a man rest for one mission and he may be better for the second one out. One solid rule here: dead men can't jump. Dead men are dead and unable to resurrect, just as in real life.

Planning Tips

Plan an escape route for each team. They will follow the path you set for them and then just stand there in the open. They don't know to run to a recon point unless you tell them to. Also, even if they see a hostage, you have to put them in Escort mode (INSERT on keypad) to make the hostage follow. Then don't run back into the fray in Escort mode -- the hostage will follow you. Go back to Clear or Engage.

Be sure your best men are the leaders of the teams. Promote them to leader in the team-planning screen. And yes, it does matter if you have a guy with only 30 stealth ability as your leader. He's apt to run right down the middle of the bullets, step on a stick in a sneak attack, or cough when he's hiding behind a door.

Default for planning for your scenario is No GoCode, meaning all of your men will rush in at the beginning. You should use the GoCodes (Q, W, E, R) if you want to execute a plan in waves. Otherwise, your team members are likely to blow your surprise attack when they rush right in and start shooting.

General Gameplay

The terrorists act differently each time you play a scenario. Sometimes they'll come when they hear gunfire; other times they'll kill the hostage. It is different each time.

Heavy gear slows down your runner. Heavy camos don't necessarily protect you more than light camos. They slow you down, and the terrorists seem to shoot for your head anyway. Not much protection there.

The length of time you hold down the left mouse button determines how far and how hard you throw a grenade. Aim up, it follows the laws of gravity and trajectory. (Yes, you can bounce them off walls, around corners, through doors, etc.)
