- Use Scouts to go "fishing" among the enemy troops. You can sacrifice a few to find out where the General is hiding.
- Always try to keep your Spy near your Marshal. How does that measly guy help? Well, when he's the first to attack, the Spy has the strength of a Marshal. However, when he's attacked, he's no stronger than a pawn?er, I mean, Scout.
- Your Flag is your most valuable asset. Place it in the back, heavily surrounded by bombs, high-ranking officials, etc.
- You know your enemy is going to send Scouts over too, so put some heavy hitters on the front line. At least put something that can crush a nosy Scout.
- Keep Miners in the back. Although they can't do much fighting, they're great at attacking bombs and diffusing them.
- Keep your eyes on your enemy. It sounds simple, but if a clump of pieces doesn't move throughout the battle, it's likely to be a flag and bombs. (Since they can't move.)
- Also, keep an eye on your graveyard. If you see how many dead your opponent has, you'll be able to judge what's left on the board. Assessing your opponent's strength this way takes a little deductive logic, but you'll master it with practice.
- Don't go rushing in with your highest-ranking officials. Yes, you can decimate the enemy, but just one bomb in the right place is enough to kill even the Marshal.
- Experiment with different troop positions. Sometimes you will hit a winning combination. Strong in the front, weaker men in back? Well, while it's true that weak men are first to be slaughtered, you at least see what your opponents have. Or do you place bombs along the front to surprise nosy Scouts? Work with it and see what you can come up with.
